Art in semi-public space
After an initial selection round, Anja de Jong was invited by the Centrum Beeldende Kunst in Dordrecht, acting on the iniative of Hans Spigt, the civic official in charge of culture, to redesign his office.
‘I see this as the bulwark, the nerve centre from which the cultural life of Dordrecht is orchestrated. The strange thing is that so little is visible of the work that is done there.
‘From my professional viewpoint, as a pictorial artist, I see Dordrecht as a cultural town permanently involved in artistic exchanges. Although we are literally on an island here, there is no shortage of contact with the ‘mainland’. Our own artists prefer to exhibit their work away from the island, leaving museums and art galleries of Dordrecht to show the work from outside of Dordrecht. I have made this ongoing interchange of artwork visible by transforming the room into a virtual transit and transport centre using wall-size photos in a ‘collage’ style that suggest work in permanent progress’, explains Anja de Jong.
