Berlin's Covered History

Anja de Jong worked as artist-in-residence at the ‘Kunstfabrik am Flutgraben’ in Berlin for six months and it was during this period that ‘Berlin’s Covered History’ was conceived and matured.

After her positive experience in Moldavia, De Jong deliberately chose to take pictures totally intuitively; this was quite different from her usual very structured approach including detailed prior research. Instead she conducted post-image textual investigation and subsequent interviews in order to put the pictures into their historical perspective.

‘Berlin’s Covered History’ is about the history of the European continent; a history one cannot avoid in Berlin. By combining image and title De Jong created a link between specific sites in today's Berlin and the historical events that took place there.
